From Managing for Quality and Productivity to
Managing for Global Sustainability—the
Continuing Evolution of Quality Management
The goal of the workshop is to provide participants with insights, ideas, and tools that will enable them to build upon their knowledge of managing for quality and productivity and to extend their contributions into the domain of managing for global sustainability. This goal will be pursued by
- framing the currently evolving management practices as the transitioning from one management technology or system to another,
- providing participants with some experience in inquiring into what this transition might look like,
- offering tools of managing for global sustainability to the participants so they can add the new tools to their existing tools for managing for quality and productivity,
- exploring and contrasting the tools for managing for quality and productivity with the tools for managing for global sustainability,
- providing opportunities for participants and presenters to establish relationships that will support further collaborative inquiry into this domain, and
- assisting the presenters in gaining new insights into both this way of framing the issues of moving toward global sustainability and the implications of attempting to do so.
This workshop builds on a session conducted by Frank, Jim, and Projaal Dutta, Director of Sustainability Initiatives for the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority, at last year=s Ott Conference, and a session conducted by Frank and Jim at the Eastern Academy of Management – International 2009 conference on Managing in a Global Economy XIII, “Management Challenges for a New World,” Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
