Expected 2008 amendment to ISO 9001 and 2009 changes to 9004

Abstract

This presentation will provide an update on the expected changes to ISO 9001 and ISO 9004.  The process required to achieve these changes by 2008 will be discussed briefly.  The presentation will focus on the expected changes to ISO 9001 and briefly review expected revisions to ISO 9004.

Description of Presentation:

By the end of 2008, ISO 9001:2000 and 9004:2000 will have had eight years of use.  That is a long time for any standard to remain unchanged.  And by the end of 2008, it is expected that there will be changes!  In 2004, ISO TC 176 Subcommittee 2 went through a rigorous process to determine whether changes are needed.  That process involved a worldwide public survey, a “systematic review” by the subcommittee committee members, development of a “justification study” to explain the need for change as defined by the worldwide survey, submission of member comments, and other inputs from earlier surveys conducted by several member countries including the US.  All of this information indicated a need for an amendment to clarify ISO 9001 and a significant revision to upgrade ISO9004.  The justification study was approved by the full TC 176 in a plenary meeting during the fall of 2004 and specifications were developed for the changes.  In late 2007, the work on the amendment to ISO 9001 should progress to the Draft International Standard stage meaning that the amendment should be available in late 2008.   So by the 2008 International Conference on ISO 9000, work on the changes to ISO 9001 should be nearing completion.  We will also have seen a second committee draft of the new 9004.  The changes to ISO 9004 are rather massive so that process will take until some time in 2009.  But the changes to ISO 9001 are coming fairly soon now and by the conference we should have a reasonable idea of the direction the 2008 versions will take.
